Urban Canyon: Delmar Housing

In urban areas, high-density housing means apartment blocks. Tasked with developing an empty lot in an urban area, this housing complex takes the suburban idea of a free-standing house with its own yard and translates it to a dense urban environment, creating a tight-knit community of townhouses.

The design of the complex and the individual houses is centered around compession and release, while the aesthetic evokes carved-out canyon. The walkways around the community are tight spaces that stretch vertically, and the bottom floor of each apartment is a comfortable, cave-like shelter. Residents ascend along a large three-story curtainwall which eventually merges into a glass roof, opening the top floor to the sky. To maintain privacy windows operate as cracks in the facade, and the the curtainwall for each house is angled to face away from other's views.
